Job Opportunity: Economic Development Manager in Kenya

(Posted 22 March 2006)

The Academic Model for the Prevention and Treatment of HIV/AIDS, or AMPATH, is a successful model of HIV/AIDS control in Kenya that uses a systems-based approach to prevention and treatment that closely links clinical care, research, and training. A partnership between Moi University School of Medicine, Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital, and Indiana University, AMPATH addresses food and income security needs, delivers and monitors ARV treatment, and fosters prevention of HIV transmission.

AMPATH aims to enhance and expand economic development opportunities for its population of HIV infected persons, expected to number nearly 50,000 persons by the end of 2007.  AMPATH has already developed a fair trade certified craft workshop, pro-bono business consultancy services to micro-entrepreneurs, a micro-finance program, and an agricultural cooperative.   Indiana University is seeking a highly motivated individual to serve as the manager for this effort.  The manager will live on site in Eldoret, Kenya and work cooperatively with a Kenyan counterpart.  Minimum requirements for this position include extensive experience working in resource-limited settings, preferably in sub-Saharan Africa; MBA degree or equivalent training; outstanding communication skills; and exceptionally strong inter-personal skills.

For additional information, please contact Ron Pettigrew, Program Manager, IU-Kenya Partnership, rpettigr@iupui.edu, +1-317-630-8695.

Ecological Economics studies the relations between the economy and the environment with a variety of methods. They include the assessment of the impacts of economic growth on the environment by means of physical indicators. They also include the economic valuation of ecosystem services and of environmental damages. Ecological Economics deals with macroeconomic issues, and also with sectoral resource policies (energy, water, transport, forestry, agriculture, fishing), and with the evaluation of investment projects. At the level of firms, Ecological Economics enters the discussion on environmental liabilities and "green" accounting. Ecological Economics also focuses on the relations between property rights and environmental management. The 2006 biennial conference of the International Society for Ecological Economics will take place on December 15 - 18 at the Habitat Centre in Delhi. One main reason to have the conference in India is the strong presence of the INSEE, lead by world famous scholars. There are many other reasons. What happens in India is important for the world.

There will be a programme of pre and post-conference seminars and field trips so that the opportunity is given to participants to learn more about environmental, economic, social, political and cultural aspects of India. Ecological Economics has Gandhian roots. India will be soon the largest country in the planet in terms of human population, with high population density. Urban growth is very rapid. The economy of India is growing at rates above 6 per cent per year, the rate of population growth is coming down, poverty is slowly decreasing. This is a country divided by caste and religion. India is also the country of "sacred groves". It is the cradle of ancient civilizations, and it has a large architectural patrimony. It is the centre of diversity of several cultivated plants. It has become a hub for the informatics industry. The car industry grows at more than 20 per cent per year.

Coal, hydroelectricity, oil, gas - all energy sources grow rapidly. The economy is not dematerializing relative to GDP. By 2020, there will be some 20,000 MWe of extra nuclear power, and perhaps a few breeder reactors. There are conflicts on mining, on the use of water, on fishing and aquaculture, and on forests, in many regions of India. Tribal areas are often the site of resource conflicts. There are also many instances of successful local management of common property resources. There are strong environmental movements. All this clearly provides a pressing mandate for the ecological economics fraternity to meet and deliberate on the various themes of ECOLOGICAL SUSTAINABILITY AND HUMAN WELL-BEING in this part of the world and around the planet. Coincidentally, the year 2006 also marks the centenary of Nicholas Georgescu-Roegen's birth. He is widely seen as one of the founders of the ecological economics approach in his book The Entropy Law and the Economic Process, 1971.

EcoHealth ONE: Forging Collaboration Between Health and Ecology

October 7th-10th 2006 at the University of Wisconsin-Madison

(posted 27May2006)

First biennial conference of the International EcoHealth Association. The meeting theme of this conference is "Promoting Global Health - Sustaining Natural Resources."

Deadline for abstracts for oral presentations or posters, as well as full sessions for the EcoHealth ONE conference is accepting submissions through the 15th of June 2006.

See website ( www.ecohealth.net/conference/site) and follow the links to abstract submission page.

Some funding is available if you are a student or young scientist from a developing country.  Visit website for details on how to apply.

Contacts:  Please contact us at conf2006@ecohealth.net if you have any questions, concerns or problems.

Content Areas and Who Should Attend:

Co-sponsored by the World Health Organization  (WHO) and Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), along with the International EcoHealth Association’s many partner institutions this conference will bring participants from around the world. The conference is for researchers, educators, policy makers and representatives of academia, government, NGOs, and international agencies. Experts from the fields of medicine, public health, wildlife and veterinary medicine, urban planning, conservation biology, ecology, geography, economics, sociology, environmental history, medical history, agronomy, and other disciplines will convene to better understand the linkages between ecology and health.

Organisers are not only interested in submitted abstracts on research and training in current issues bridging ecology and health, but also historical papers or case studies that might inform current research questions, directions, and policy addressing human or wildlife health problems stemming from ecological disturbance (see list of Preliminary Sessions.)

Because the integrity of human health, wildlife health, and ecosystems are closely tied, EcoHealth ONE will provide a unique forum to (1) advance emerging, highly interdisciplinary scientific work in this arena, (2) promote the interaction of a diverse audience concerned with sustainable health and environment, and (3) consider how to address challenges in an effective and unified way.
