l’University School of Medecine de Moi, l e Teaching and Referral
AMPATH a développé

Conference Background and
themes
The environmental and
resource economics field continues to grow fueled by a greater appreciation of
the need to understand the economic roots of environmental challenges and to
formulate economically sound solutions. Despite a relatively high level of
interest and activity in the field, opportunities for learning and
cross-pollination are relatively limited. As part of the C.A.P.E. programme,
SANBI and its partners are thus pleased to announce a two day conference on
economics in natural resource management that will take place in Cape Town on
the 21st and 22nd May 2009.
The conference will have a
relatively broad focus on environmental resource economics as it applies to
natural resource management. As such it will cover the economics of:
Biodiversity
conservation;
Water resource management
with particular emphasis on the management of natural aquatic environments;
Agricultural
resource management with particular emphasis on the management of natural
landscapes;
Climate change
as it relates to natural resource management questions; and
Marine resource management.
Papers and posters are
invited under theses broad themes and are expected to include contributions on:
Economic or
market-based instruments
Payment for
Ecosystem Services
Environmental
Resource Economic inputs to planning processes (e.g. conservation planning and
spatial planning)
Ecological-economic modelling
Valuation of
environmental goods and services
Livelihoods
issues as they relate to natural resource management
Political
economy and policy considerations in natural resource management
Natural Resource
Accounting
Objectives
The conference will bring
together those with an interest in economics from the public and private
sectors, academia and consultancy to share results of recent research and to
discuss issues relevant to the practical application of environmental resource
economics. By creating a mutual platform for those who commission work and
those who undertake it, the conference aims to contribute to the effective use
of environmental economics for environmental policy and management, as well as
influence the research agenda. In essence, it will strive to match theoretical
inputs with practical considerations around policy and implementation.
Who should attend?
All researchers, managers,
policy makers, government officials, NGO representatives, donors, consultants
and students working on or interested in the economic issues associated with
natural resource management. While the geographic focus is likely to fall on

Ecological Economics studies the relations between the
economy and the environment with a variety of methods. They include the
assessment of the impacts of economic growth on the environment by means of
physical indicators. They also include the economic valuation of ecosystem
services and of environmental damages. Ecological Economics
deals with macroeconomic issues, and also with sectoral resource policies
(energy, water, transport, forestry, agriculture, fishing), and with the
evaluation of investment projects. At the level of firms, Ecological
Economics enters the discussion on environmental liabilities and
"green" accounting. Ecological Economics also focuses on the
relations between property rights and environmental management. The 2006
biennial conference of the International Society for Ecological Economics will
take place on December 15 - 18 at the Habitat Centre in
There will be a programme of pre and post-conference
seminars and field trips so that the opportunity is given to participants to
learn more about environmental, economic, social, political and cultural
aspects of India. Ecological Economics has Gandhian roots.
Coal, hydroelectricity, oil, gas - all energy sources
grow rapidly. The economy is not dematerializing relative to GDP. By 2020,
there will be some 20,000 MWe of extra nuclear power, and perhaps a few breeder
reactors. There are conflicts on mining, on the use of water, on fishing and
aquaculture, and on forests, in many regions of

l’industrie informatique.

Should Attend:
Co-sponsored by the World
Health Organization
(WHO) and Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), along with the
International EcoHealth Association’s many partner institutions this
conference will bring participants from around the world. The conference is for
researchers, educators, policy makers and representatives of academia,
government, NGOs, and international agencies. Experts from the fields of
medicine, public health, wildlife and veterinary medicine, urban planning,
conservation biology, ecology, geography, economics, sociology, environmental
history, medical history, agronomy, and other disciplines will convene to
better understand the linkages between ecology and health.
Organisers are not only
interested in submitted abstracts on research and training in current issues
bridging ecology and health, but also historical papers or case studies that
might inform current research questions, directions, and policy addressing
human or wildlife health problems stemming from ecological disturbance (see
list of Preliminary Sessions.)
Because the integrity of
human health, wildlife health, and ecosystems are closely tied, EcoHealth ONE
will provide a unique forum to (1) advance emerging, highly interdisciplinary
scientific work in this arena, (2) promote the interaction of a diverse
audience concerned with sustainable health and environment, and (3) consider
how to address challenges in an effective and unified way.
